Vocal Week – Day 1c : Love Brought You Here Bounce

A complete lead vocal has been completed for Kiss Us Goodbye. Kiss Us Goodbye, if you remember, is the song for which Mike’s Science Project was created.

It’s been going well today. It’s hot here in SoCal, and the air conditioning units are right outside our studio walls, so no air when we’re tracking vocals. :( I’d put on the webcam, but this is a family show.

Here’s a rough mix of some of the work we did today. Everything you hear except parts of Erica’s lead we tracked today. Keep in mind this is a rough mix. There’s no FX / Processing / EQ on the drums or instruments. A real mix would take about a full day to accomplish, perhaps longer on a tune like this. You’ll hear things jump out, things out of whack. There’s a lot of competition right now in the midrange of the tune, the mixer will have some work there.

This is what we’re listening to right now, and we want to share it with you, warts and all. Those of you interested in the mixing and mastering process will have something to compare when you get the final product.

Cheers!

    Sweet.

you guys rock. love the tasty harmonies.
I can’t wait to compare with the final product…Lately I’ve been mixing for myself a little bit…and I am quickly realizing how little I really know about that whole side of things.

on a side note: I saw Hellboy 2 today and it KICKS BUTT. Totally awesome. And I’m not even a fanboy…just discovered Guillerrrrrrrrrmo Del Toro with Pan’s Labyrinth and watched the first Hellboy Saturday night.
    The sequel is even better.

    LOVE the bari guitar….

    Sounds great you guys…

Yeah, the bari totally makes this song.

Oh and also the tasty drumming, bass groove, piano part, and killer vocals. :)

BTW, Rosy, if for some reason you ever read this. I know that drums are an instrument, as well. I am writing fast here, brother. It’s like when someone goes, “Ok great… let’s see here. The musician’s dressing room is this way, and the singer’s dressing room is this way….”

    Dude,

When you say “I’d put on the webcam, but this is a family show.” does that mean you’re wearing a speedo???

  7. Teri — July 15, 2008

Lazily luxurious…layered…lovely…lyrical…luscious… Yeah, all that and more! Love it, love it, love it! (And my opinion never counts, I know, because I’m the mom and I’m SUPPOSED to love it. Sigh.)

    Bill -

Speedos are for overweight dudes with gold chains, or Michael Phelps. Nowhere in the middle is ok.

    I’m a boxer type.

[...] any and all hoarseness. She can sing, for example all the BGVs (Background Vocals) on the print of Love Brought You Here were sung yesterday, but as for any heavy lifting, she’s not there [...]

Lovely, lovely, lovely. The changeup at the bridge is fantastic…just when you think you might want to curl up in the comfy and melodic 6/8 fluidity, it digs in and makes you want to shake yo thang.

Don’t envy the AC-less tracking. Brings back many TNS memories.

Awesome! I listened to the whole thing. Very warm sound.

That piano part on the bridge out was a bitch to wrestle to the ground. I’m glad we fought for it. I love how E settles her vocal right in on top of it.
